Dictation — Voice to Note

Premium users can record audio directly in WhichNotes and have it transcribed into a note automatically. Great for capturing thoughts on the go without typing.

How to Use Dictation

  1. In the note input area, click the microphone icon (🎙️)
  2. Allow microphone access if prompted by your browser
  3. Speak clearly — transcription happens in real time
  4. Click the microphone icon again (or the stop button) to finish
  5. The transcribed text appears in the note input, ready to save

Tips for Better Transcription

  • Speak at a normal pace — not too fast
  • Minimize background noise
  • Use a headset or earbuds with a built-in mic for clearest audio
  • Pause briefly between sentences
  • Speak proper nouns clearly (names, product names, acronyms)

Supported Languages

Dictation is powered by your browser's built-in speech recognition (Web Speech API). Language support depends on your browser and OS:

  • Chrome / Edge: Excellent — wide language support
  • Safari: Good — uses Apple's on-device recognition
  • Firefox: Limited — Web Speech API may not be available

For the best experience, use Chrome or Edge.

Troubleshooting

Microphone button not appearing

"Microphone access denied"

  1. Click the padlock icon in your browser's address bar
  2. Set microphone to Allow
  3. Refresh the page and try again

Transcription is inaccurate

  • Reduce background noise
  • Speak more slowly
  • If transcription is consistently wrong, edit the text manually after recording

No microphone button in Firefox

  • Firefox does not fully support Web Speech API on all platforms
  • Use Chrome or Edge for dictation

Privacy

Audio is processed by your browser's built-in speech recognition — it is not sent to WhichNotes servers. The transcribed text is what gets saved to your note.
